Accident on Route 33 Today: Traffic Disruption After Reported Crash Investigation

A serious accident along Route 33 caused significant traffic disruptions Tuesday as emergency crews and law enforcement responded to multiple crash scenes and ongoing investigations involving overturned vehicles and roadway closures.

One of the major incidents occurred in Rockingham County, Virginia, where authorities responded to a crash involving an overturned school bus along Route 33 near Penn Laird. According to local officials, the bus overturned in the median after the driver reportedly experienced a medical emergency while traveling eastbound on Spotswood Trail. Two students, an aide, and the driver were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities later stated the driver was charged with reckless driving for failure to maintain control of the vehicle.

Emergency personnel from multiple agencies responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports that the school bus had overturned on its side. Witnesses and first responders described heavy traffic delays in the area as portions of Route 33 were temporarily shut down to allow emergency operations and accident investigation efforts to continue safely.

In a separate Route 33 crash investigation reported earlier this year in the same general corridor, a teenage driver was seriously injured after a rollover accident near Cross Keys Road. Virginia State Police indicated that the vehicle left the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned multiple times, ejecting the driver from the vehicle. Speed was identified as a possible contributing factor in that crash.

Authorities continue urging motorists traveling along Route 33 to exercise caution, reduce speed near emergency scenes, and remain alert to changing traffic conditions. Investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s crash while reviewing witness statements and roadway evidence.

Traffic backups stretched for several miles during the response, with drivers reporting lengthy delays as law enforcement redirected vehicles around the affected area. The closure created disruptions for commuters, school transportation schedules, and local businesses throughout the morning hours.

Community members expressed concern following the crash, particularly because children were involved in the overturned school bus incident. Many residents praised first responders and bystanders who reportedly assisted passengers before emergency crews fully secured the scene.

Officials have not reported any fatalities connected to Tuesday’s Route 33 school bus crash, and the investigation remains active. Additional updates are expected as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and assessing roadway safety conditions in the area.
