Emergency services were called to North Melbourne Railway Station in Melbourne on Monday afternoon after a young boy was struck and trapped under a train in a serious incident that caused major disruption across the city’s rail network.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 4pm when the boy, believed to be a school student aged around 11–12, was on a platform and became caught by a passing train. Emergency crews, including Fire Rescue Victoria and Ambulance Victoria, rushed to the scene within minutes as commuters were evacuated and services were suspended.
Firefighters used hydraulic lifting equipment to raise the train carriages in order to free the child, in a complex rescue operation that lasted up to an hour. Paramedics provided urgent medical treatment at the scene before transporting him under emergency conditions to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Witness accounts and emergency service statements describe a large and coordinated response involving multiple fire crews, advanced life support paramedics, and police officers working together under difficult and distressing conditions. Authorities confirmed the boy sustained serious injuries, particularly to his lower body, and was in critical condition upon hospital arrival.
The incident caused significant disruption to Melbourne’s rail services, with several lines temporarily shut down while emergency responders worked on the tracks. Commuters faced delays and cancellations during peak travel hours as train operations were suspended at the affected station.
Officials have not released further details about the circumstances leading to the incident, and investigations are ongoing. The focus remains on the child’s medical condition and supporting emergency personnel who responded to the traumatic scene.
The event has deeply affected the local community, particularly students and families connected to nearby schools, with messages of concern and support circulating widely.
As authorities continue to investigate, transport officials are expected to review safety measures at the station to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
