With deep sorrow and reverence, we honor the life and legacy of Elder W. Mark Bassett, who passed away on May 11, 2026, in St. George, Utah, following a tragic accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. His sudden passing has brought profound grief to his family, friends, and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the world.
Elder Bassett faithfully served as a General Authority Seventy since April 2016, dedicating his life to ministry, leadership, and the advancement of the gospel of Jesus Christ. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Executive Director of the Missionary Department, where he played a vital role in guiding and supporting missionary efforts on a global scale. His leadership coincided with a remarkable period of growth, as increasing numbers of missionaries answered the call to serve.
Known for his unwavering faith and Christlike example, Elder Bassett approached every responsibility with humility, diligence, and love. He had a profound ability to inspire others, particularly young missionaries, to live with purpose and devotion. Just days before his passing, during a devotional at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, he bore a powerful testimony, encouraging all to “invite everyone to come—and do everything you can to help them enter this beautiful gate, which leads to eternal life.” These words now stand as a lasting reflection of his life’s mission.
Beyond his ecclesiastical service, Elder Bassett was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His love for his family was evident in all that he did, and he found great joy in the relationships he nurtured at home. He is deeply mourned by his beloved wife, Angela, his children, and his grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy of faith, love, and integrity.
Elder W. Mark Bassett will be remembered as a servant of God, a compassionate leader, and a man whose life was firmly rooted in faith and service. His influence will continue to be felt through the countless lives he touched and the example he set.
As we reflect on his life, we do so with gratitude and hope, trusting in the eternal promises he so faithfully taught. May he rest in peace, and may his memory continue to inspire devotion, kindness, and unwavering faith in all who knew him.
